What Is a Backflow Preventer?
A backflow preventer is a valve assembly installed on your irrigation system's water supply line that stops contaminated water — containing fertilizers, pesticides, and soil bacteria — from flowing backward into the potable water supply. In Florida, where irrigation systems run year-round and chemical applications are frequent, backflow prevention is critical to protecting drinking water safety.
The Febco 765 pressure vacuum breaker is the most common assembly in South Florida residential irrigation systems. Commercial systems often use Watts, Wilkins, or Apollo assemblies in larger pipe sizes.
Florida Backflow Testing Requirements
Under Florida Administrative Code Chapter 62-555, all irrigation systems connected to a potable water supply must have an approved backflow prevention assembly tested annually by a licensed tester. Results must be filed directly with the water utility. Failure to test annually can result in water service interruption.
What We Test and Certify
- Pressure vacuum breakers (PVB) — Febco 765, Watts 800, Wilkins 720A
- Reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies — Febco 825, Watts 909, Wilkins 975
- Double check valve assemblies (DCV)
- Atmospheric vacuum breakers (AVB)
Common Repairs During Testing
During testing we frequently find assemblies that are failing. We carry repair kits for all major brands on our service vehicles and can typically repair a failed assembly during the same visit. Common repairs include:
- Relief valve replacement (Febco 765 — most common repair in South Florida)
- Check valve disc and seat replacement
- Full assembly replacement when repair is not cost-effective
- Bonnet and poppet kits for RPZ assemblies
Commercial Backflow Testing Programs
For commercial properties and HOAs with multiple backflow assemblies, we offer annual testing programs that schedule all devices in a single visit, provide a complete certified report package, and handle all utility filings. This is the most efficient way to manage compliance for properties with multiple irrigation systems.
Is Your Backflow Test Overdue?
If your irrigation system was installed more than 12 months ago and you haven't received a certification letter from your water utility, your test is likely overdue. Call us to schedule — we file everything on your behalf.
