Lighting Techniques We Design With

Uplighting

The most dramatic landscape lighting effect. Ground-mounted fixtures aim light upward, illuminating trees, palms, and architectural elements from below. A properly placed uplight on a mature Royal Palm or Bismarckia creates a striking focal point visible from the street. We use adjustable-beam well lights for most uplight applications.

Moonlighting / Downlighting

Fixtures mounted in tree canopies cast soft light downward through branches — mimicking moonlight filtering through a tree. This is the most naturalistic lighting effect available, especially beautiful under large Live Oaks and Gumbo Limbos. Moonlighting creates dappled shadows on the ground that look genuinely elegant.

Pathway Lighting

Low-profile bollard or directional fixtures that illuminate walkways and driveway edges. Properly designed pathway lighting provides safety and creates a welcoming approach to your home at night. Common mistake: spacing fixtures too close together, creating a runway effect instead of even distribution.

Wall Washing

Fixtures positioned close to a wall and aimed along its surface to illuminate texture and create ambient glow. Excellent for highlighting stucco home exteriors, stone walls, and decorative privacy walls.

Silhouette Lighting

Fixtures positioned behind a plant to cast its shadow on a wall behind it. A Bismarckia palm silhouetted against a white stucco wall creates an extraordinarily dramatic effect. Best used as a focal point accent.

Our Installation Process

1. Nighttime design consultation — We walk your property at dusk or after dark with portable demonstration lights so you see the actual effect before any fixtures are installed.
2. System design — We calculate total wattage, transformer sizing, and wire run lengths. Undersized transformers are the most common failure in DIY systems — we size everything with 20% headroom for future additions.
3. Transformer installation — Mounted to an exterior wall near an outdoor outlet, with photocell and timer for automatic dusk-to-dawn operation.
4. Wire runs — 12/2 low-voltage direct-burial cable run underground through landscape beds.
5. Fixture installation and aiming — Each fixture is staked or mounted, aimed precisely, and adjusted after dark to confirm the actual lighting effect matches the design.
