Sod Varieties for South Florida Lawns
Floratam St. Augustine — Most Popular Choice
Floratam is the dominant lawn grass in Broward County for good reason. It's heat-tolerant, handles South Florida's intense summer sun, and produces the thick, lush look most homeowners want. Needs regular irrigation — which is where a properly designed system makes all the difference. Best for: full sun to partial shade, typical residential lawns.
Bermuda Grass — Best for Full Sun & High Traffic
Bermuda is the toughest, most wear-resistant grass for South Florida. It's the standard for commercial properties, athletic fields, and residential lawns that see heavy foot traffic. Requires full sun. Goes dormant and browns in winter, then bounces back in spring. Best for: commercial properties, full-sun yards, high-traffic areas.
Zoysia — Premium Texture, Drought Tolerance
Zoysia produces a fine-textured, dense, carpet-like lawn. More drought-tolerant than Floratam, handles moderate shade, and requires less fertilizer. Slower to establish than Floratam, but once established it's one of the lowest-maintenance lawns in South Florida. Best for: upscale residential, partial shade, low-maintenance preference.
Bahia — Budget-Friendly, Low Maintenance
Bahia is a coarse, tough grass primarily used for large rural lots, roadsides, and areas where appearance is secondary to durability and low cost. Best for: large rural properties, slopes, commercial medians.
Our Sod Installation Process
- Old turf removal — We strip dead or undesirable grass using a sod cutter, minimizing soil disturbance and removing roots that could harbor pests.
- Soil preparation — We grade the area for proper slope, add topsoil or organic material where needed, and till to allow root penetration.
- Irrigation check — Before laying sod, we verify your irrigation system covers the installation area adequately. If it doesn't, we fix coverage gaps first.
- Sod installation — We lay sod in staggered brick patterns, cutting edges cleanly and butting joints tightly to prevent gaps and drying.
- Rolling and watering — We roll the sod to ensure root-to-soil contact, then immediately irrigate thoroughly. This first watering is critical.
- Watering instructions — You receive specific watering instructions for the first 30 days and we program your controller for the establishment schedule.
The #1 Reason New Sod Fails in Florida
Inadequate irrigation coverage. Before any sod we install touches the ground, we verify your system covers every inch of the installation area. It's the single most important factor in establishment success — and most other companies skip this step.
